Twite, Western Isles © Cliff Reddick

Twite used to be a regular winter visitor in small numbers to the coast around Bristol many years ago. A good way to see them was to park up on the coast road next to Aust Warth and then wait for the birds which were feeding on the saltmarsh to fly over and on to the roadside pools to drink.

The decline in Avon started some time in the early 1980's and the birds are very rare here now.

We scrounged these photographs from Brian Rabbitts on the Western Isles where the birds still breed.
